How to make a photo blog

Add gallery using FTP

What we want to do now, is to add gallery plug-in to the original wordpress installation.

Download NextGEN Gallery 1.1.0 .zip — 642 KB

Un-zip (right click, extract). This will create a folder on your computer. Inside this folder you will find another folder named: nextgen-gallery – You have to upload this to the wordpress installation folder on the server.

To upload files to the server, you will need FTP program. FTP (File Transfer Protocol) is the simplest and most secure way to exchange files over the Internet. Whether you know it or not, you most likely use FTP all the time. To make use of FTP you will need a proper client (software).

Download FileZilla Ftp client (opens new page, where you can choose client for your operating system, if you are running windows, download windows set-up file).

1.
Install package, and run the program.

2.
url: ftp.yourdomain.com
username / password: same as cpanel settings.
Now click connect.

How to use FTP client

3.

When FTP client connects, you will be presented with two windows: left side is your local computer, right side is the remote server.

On the left side, that is your HDD, navigate to the nextgen-gallery folder.
On the right side go to public_html/wordpress/wp-content/plugins

Now drag and drop gallery folder from left to right like shown on the example image. Wait till all files upload, should take a while on slow connections! so be patient!

4.
Finally it’s time to activate gallery plug-in. Log-in into wp-admin, go to www.yourdomain.com/wp-admin you should have installation username / password on the email. Log-in and go to Plugins, find nextgen-gallery and click activate. This is it, all done! Refresh admin panel, and check new section ‘Gallery’ added to administration menu bar.

May be a useful guide for some people, however from wordpress version 2.7 you can just install the nextgen gallery (and other plugins) from within the admin area. This is much easier (like fantastico) to install and doesn’t involve downloading and uploading the files etc

Thanks Jon, this information effectively cuts down the installation time by half… and also my little article into half. Anyways, it’s useful to know hot to use FTP, so I will not remove the extra part.

Article updated to take into account new wordpress 2.9 capabilities. It’s much more easier to install plugins now. New article is half size of the original.

      Enjoy!

Sandro, are there any better alternatives to the NextGEN gallery plugin? Could you advise some great photo blog themes for WP? (paid/free — no matter) I consider starting my own photolog.

Pete » Hey! Thanks allot for the comments :)

I didn’t find anything better or even similar to NextGen gallery plugin in terms of functionality… it might be a bit confusing in the beginning, with too many customization options, but it’s the best.

On the other hand, there are many wp themes that incorporate functionality of a gallery, so you don’t really need a gallery plugin. To hunt for a photography wp theme (with gallery functionality) I recommend this site: http://themeforest.net/ (Note, in the search field select ‘wordpress’ and luse Photography or portfolio as a search keyword).
