Russian aggression against Georgia

08.10.08 | 9 Comments

Finally Russia shows its evil face to the world… Still ruled by imperialist ambitions, Russia started a full blown war against Georgia. Under the mandate of keeping ‘peace’ they are bombing several cities in Georgia, destroying houses and killing hundreds of civilians. Apparently Russia has a vague understanding of what peace means…

Georgia has around 26,900 regular army soldiers, Russia has 641,000 - Compared to Georgia, Russian military machine is huge and intimidating… but there is a difference in motivation, Georgian people are fighting for their land and families while Russians are invaders, aggressors…

Russian bombs killing civilians:

International quotes on Russia-Georgia conflict:

US President George W. Bush: The attacks are occurring in regions of Georgia far from the zone of conflict in South Ossetia. They mark a dangerous escalation in the crisis. We’ve urged an immediate halt to the violence and a standdown by all troops.

U.S. Ambassador Zalmay Khalilzad: We call on Russia to cease attacks on Georgia by aircraft and missiles, respect Georgia’s territorial integrity, and withdraw its ground combat forces from Georgian soil.

US presidential candidate John Mccain: Russia should immediately and unconditionally cease its military operations and withdraw all forces from sovereign Georgian territory. The US should immediately convene an emergency session of the United Nations Security Council to call on Russia to reverse course. The international community needs to establish a truly independent and neutral peacekeeping force in South Ossetia.

Polish president LECH KACZYNSKI: The president believes that any interference in internal matters of the republic of Georgia is unacceptable and that any such action, if it intensifies, could lead to tragic consequences.

French Foreign Minister BERNARD KOUCHNER: France reiterates its attachment to the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Georgia in its internationally recognised borders. France calls on all parties to cease hostilities immediately and return without delay to negotiations, which are the only way to resolve this crisis.

Chronology of events that led to military conflict:

July 11, 2008: Georgia threatens to shoot down Russian planes if they intrude on Georgian airspace again, after Russia confirms that four of its planes circled over South Ossetia.

April 3, 2008: Georgia fails to secure a roadmap to NATO membership at an alliance summit in Romania when NATO leaders delay a decision under Russian pressure.

March 18, 2008: Moscow agrees to restore air travel between Russia and Georgia. In October 2006, Russia banned flights, stopped mail service and cracked down on Georgian migrants after Georgia briefly detained four Russian military officers it accused of spying.

Nov. 15, 2007: Russia completes withdrawal of troops based in Georgia since the 1991 Soviet collapse, although several thousand remain as peacekeepers in the breakaway provinces of South Ossetia and in Abkhazia, despite protests from the Georgian government.

July 2006: Saakashvili passes up a Moscow summit of the Commonwealth of Independent States, an alliance of former Soviet nations, after the Kremlin tells him that Russian President Vladimir Putin will not have time for a one-on-one meeting.

March 2006: Russia bans imports of Georgian wine, a major export, citing health concerns.

January 2006: A pipeline explosion in southern Russia leaves Georgia without natural gas supplies for a week during a harsh winter; Saakashvili blames Moscow. Russian officials deny involvement.
