Edward Steichen – Famous American Photographer
Edward Steichen is credited with having the photograph that has brought the most money ever. He is an award winning photographer who was also a brave soldier and used his photography skills virtually everywhere he had ever went.
Edward is not a native citizen to the United States as nor many were for his time era. He had moved to the United States along with parents at the age of two years old. By the time he was 12 and in 1900 he was considered a naturalized citizen of the United States.
As he grew older he began to develop and interest and displayed a true talent for painting. In fact, during the early 20th century it is stated that Alfred Stieglitz came across his work and found it to be stunning. He had even purchased three of Edward Steichen’s original paintings. As well, he was so fond of the work that a couple of years later Stieglitz had befriended Steichen and asked him to do the logo for the magazine he was creating known as Camera Work.
Edward Steichen’s work began to gain national exposure slowly as his work in photography began to take off as well. As he was drafted to enter into the Second World War the government also took notice of his photography work. He was actually placed into a position of Director for the Naval Photographic Institute. He was responsible for giving orders and directing the documentation of the war as many put their lives on the line to keep the public, mothers, and wives back home up to date on what was actually happening overseas to their sons and husbands.
Moonlight, one of his works as a relatively young man which was a picture of a still pond with moon lighting behind it became the photograph that brought the most money ever. The importance of his artwork is that it remains to be one of the oldest color photographs in existence. There are only three copies of Moonlight that exist. Due to the technique used to apply color to the photograph, each one is unique. In February 2006, Moonlight brought $2.9 million at a public auction. The other two Moonlight photographs are on public displays in museums.
