Enjoy collection of my favorite black and white photos. Mostly includes street photography, but also few portraits… Some old, some new, I’ve collected them during last few years, and hold them dear as every single one of them reminds me of a particular mood and thought.

“Black and White” – is incredibly charged notion in our society. It describes contrast, personality of the people, endless battle or timeless balance of good and evil. In photography it’s a powerful tool to strip reality of colors and display bare bone truth!

Black and white medium: the beginning, the art, the soul of photography… is my favorite working space. Concept is very simple, all you need to do is to convey an idea in two basic colors… “Black and White”. But this simplicity leads to complications, shooting in monochrome is like stripping yourself of the powerful visual tool: impact of color.

I believe challenge lies in the fact that colors play big role in animal kingdom, and obviously in our lives. We are surrounded with colors: red is warning, sexually charged color; green soothing, associated with calmness and nature; blue, watery dreamy mood… All I’m just trying to say is that black and white medium is not natural – it’s an imaginary world for, maybe even a dream.

But as strange as it may sound, this challenges or problems of black and white photography are exactly the strengths of it… Most striking photographs that I’ve seen, most memorable fractions of the second, where exactly the ones done in monochrome…

Edit: This post was made in 2007. Five years have passed since, and now in 2012 when I view these photos I see so many areas where they can be improved… especially in post-processing, one day I will re-work them all and also remove those ugly watermarks I used to utilize in those years.
